Department Overview

Student Health Promotion (SHP) is a department of the Dean of Students within the Division of Student Affairs.  We assess health behaviors, collaborate with campus partners, and deliver health promotion initiatives consistent with best practices to support healthy lifestyles, personal development & growth, and academic success of our students.

Our Mission

We inspire every ISU student to thrive by utilizing the power of public health.

Our Values

  • Professionalism, Ethics, and Integrity.  We promote and abide by professional and ethical guidelines.  Our communication and actions represent the principles of honesty, autonomy, beneficence, respect, and justice.
  • Evidenced-Based.  We believe the best policies, practices, and programs are ones based on research, with evidence that demonstrates effectiveness.
  • Participation and Collaboration from those we serve.  We believe sustainable health promotion change can only occur when the community has the opportunity to develop ownership.
  • Social Justice.  We are committed to providing health opportunities for all community members and strive to reduce systemic disparities in health.

Our Practices

SHP brings a public health lens to all aspects of campus life and supports strategies to improve the health of the community.  We take a social ecological and multidimensional perspective to strengthen student wellbeing, resilience, and academic success by enhancing individual factors like increasing knowledge and skills, and also work to develop healthy & supportive policies, increase social connectedness, improve access to health care, and mobilize community action.See below for the Social Ecological Model.

We work to provide a supportive, healthy environment and help students discover and implement strategies for maintaining balance between the multiple dimensions of wellness; ones that works best for them.  We help students develop healthy lifestyles to enhance their development as they become responsible, contributing members of Indiana and the global society. See below for dimensions of wellness.
